Boeing has managed to make further improvements to the efficiency of its new B737 MAX aircraft.
The planemaker revealed this week that engineers have completed an assessment of the single-aisle jet’s performance, confirming an additional 1% fuel-efficiency improvement over the 13% reduction already promised.
“Airplane performance just continues to improve,” said Keith Leverkuhn, vice president and general manager of the 737 MAX programme. “We have been very disciplined in our approach and continue to realise more benefit for our customers as we retire risk on the programme and get further into development.”
Airlines operating the B737 MAX now will see a 14% fuel-efficiency improvement over today’s most fuel-efficient single-aisle aircraft.
The B737 MAX is the new engined version of the B737 series, featuring three versions – the smaller B737 MAX 7, standard B737 MAX 8 and stretched B737 MAX 9. Boeing has now taken orders for more than 1,500 of the new aircraft, which is expected to enter service in 2017.
It will compete in the single-aisle market with the new Airbus A320neo and Bombardier CSeries.
