Boeing has confirmed a major order for its B737 MAX aircraft.

Kuwait-based aircraft leasing company ALAFCO has finalised an order for 20 B737 MAX 8s valued at US$2 billion at current list prices. The order was first announced at the UK’s Farnborough Airshow in July.

“This is the first order for the 737 MAX from the Middle East, which is one of the aviation industry’s highest growth regions,” said Ray Conner, president & CEO of Boeing’s commercial unit. “We are proud of the confidence that ALAFCO has placed in the 737 MAX, and hope to continue this partnership well into the future.”

The 737 MAX is the new-engine variant of the current single-aisle B737 and is designed to reduce fuel burn by 13% compared with today’s model. It is scheduled to be launched in 2017.
