Boeing has started final assembly work on its first B787-10 Dreamliner, the largest version of the revolutionary long-haul aircraft series.
Now under construction at Boeing’s factory in South Carolina, the new wide-body aircraft is expected to be ready for its first test flight in 2017, with its entry into commercial service scheduled for 2018.
“As we enter the next phase of the 787-10’s development, we eagerly watch our first airplane come to life,” said Ken Sanger, vice president & general manager of 787 development. “This is the result of years of preparation and solid performance by our Boeing teammates and supplier partners.”
The B787-10 is the third and final member of the Dreamliner series, which was the first passenger aircraft in the world to be built using composite materials, making it lighter, quieter and more fuel-efficient than previous aircraft.
Measuring 68.3 metres from nose to tail – 11.5m longer than the original B787-8 – the B787-10 will be able to seat approximately 330 passengers in a two-class configuration.
To date, Boeing has received 154 orders for the B787-10 from airlines including Etihad (30 aircraft), Singapore Airlines (30), EVA Air (18), United Airlines (14) and British Airways (10).
