s part of its 30 year plan, which was made public at the end of last year.

It was only mentioned as part of the company’s ‘wish list’ which extends beyond 2040.

Chief executive Mark Carne is under pressure from various groups and has now been told to act on the “nationally important” Stanstead improvements.

A four-track solution, allowing fast trains between London and Stansted to run at around 20 minutes, less than half the current journey time, is the favoured option.

A spokesman for Stansted owner Manchester Airports Group told The Times that “unlike other London airports, Stansted has spare runway capacity today and significant room to grow in the future”.

“It is vital that faster rail services are delivered between London and Stansted to ensure that this potential is utilised, and it is encouraging that the mayor recognises this,” he added.
