Brazil’s GOL Linhas Aereas Inteligentes has placed a major order for 60 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft.

The deal, which is worth US$6 billion at list prices, becomes the largest single order in the history of South American aviation.

“The decision to order Boeing 737 MAX is in line with our commitment to maintaining a modern and safe fleet that will allow us to sustain our competitive advantage in the long-term,” said Paulo Kakinoff, CEO of GOL. “The new airplanes will have one of the best cost-benefit ratios in the market due to its unique operational economy, so it is fully compatible with our low-cost model.”

Sao Paulo-based GOL is Brazil’s second biggest airline, operating 810 daily flights to 85 destinations. The B737-MAX is the new fuel-efficient version of the popular B737 single-aisle jet.
