A two-day conference to discuss tourism development in the BRICS countries is being held in India.
The ‘BRICS Convention on Tourism’ was inaugurated on Thursday 1 September 2016 in Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh, and will conclude on Friday. Delegations from the five BRICS countries – Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa – are in attendance, including South Africa’s Tourism Minister Derek Hanekom.
The group is being hosted by Shri Surendra Patwa, Tourism Minister for the state of Madhya Pradesh, and the Indian government’s Tourism Secretary, Shri Vinod Zutshi.
Speaking at the opening of the event, Zutshi stressed about the importance of tourism as a catalyst for economic growth and job creation.
The event is aimed at aligning the tourism development of these large and populous countries. A new ‘BRICS Working Stream on Tourism’ has also been proposed, comprising government representatives and stakeholders from the private sector.
Prior to the event, delegates were able to explore the local UNESCO World Heritage sites of Khajuraho, which is famed for its ancient Hindu and Jain temples.
