Today’s 45+ traveller is more adventurous and cultural when going on holiday than they were in the 1980s, a new survey has found.

Research with 1,000 people aged over 46 told the Post Office they are now more likely to try local cuisine or learn a language before jetting off on holiday. Half (51%) are more adventurous than they were in their twenties and 56% are happy to go away from the typical tourist trails.

More than double are also happy to go it alone now too, with 66% happy to take a solo holiday although 61% are looking for love.

The destinations that tourists visit remain relatively the same, with Spain, France and Ireland in the top three for both 1983 and 2013.

Online booking capabilities were voted as the biggest advances in the last 30 years (54%) and around 45% said they ‘craved’ a one-stop shop to get essentials such as insurance, passport and travel money.

The infographic shown here from the Post Office shows how those in the poll are feeling this summer.
