Cambodia will need to find an additional 200,000 tourism workers to achieve its full-year target of welcoming seven million international visitors by 2020, a senior official has stated.

The Phnom Penh Post reported Try Chhiv, deputy director-general at the Cambodian Tourism Ministry, as saying that the country has a “shortage of skilled labour and resources related to tourism”.

At present there are approximately 620,000 Cambodians working in the tourism sector, and the country handled 4.8m international arrivals last year, according to Chhiv.

“If we had between 800,000 to one million Cambodians trained in hospitality, we would be able to handle future growth,” he added.

Cambodia’s total population is just over 15m people.
