Capella Hotel Group has revealed plans to launch a unique urban villa resort in an historic district of Shanghai.

Being developed by Shanghai Hengfu Investment & Development, the new Capella Shanghai Jian Ye Li will convert a cluster of historical “shikumen” (stone warehouse) buildings into a new luxury resort. Shikumen were a landmark of 1930s Shanghai, and the Capella development is thought to be the last remaining estate.

Originally built by the French, these heritage buildings combine traditional Shanghainese and Western architectural styles. They now form part of the Jian Ye Li heritage area, and following a major renovation the complex will be transformed into a new hotel, residences and retail gallery, all of which are due to open in early 2017.

“Capella Hotel Group is deeply honoured to be appointed as the custodian of Shanghai’s last remaining shikumen estate and an important part of Shanghai’s cultural heritage,” said Horst Schulze, chairman & CEO of Capella Hotel Group.

“The juxtaposition of a contemporary gateway city with the alluring heritage of a past era makes Capella Shanghai truly unique. We will instil our Capella service philosophy and leverage on our expertise in the ultra-luxury segment to create a new hospitality icon for Shanghai.”

Once completed, Capella Shanghai Jian Ye Li will feature 55 villas, 40 residences, a library, spa, a French brasserie and venues for small events. The Gallery, which forms the facade of the Jian Ye Li estate, will house a collection of retail brands.

Capella currently operates properties in Singapore, Germany, Mexico, St Lucia and the US, and is also planning to open a riverside hotel in Bangkok.
