Cathay Pacific has ordered a further three wide-body passenger aircraft from Boeing.
Following the recent landmark order for 21 Boeing 777-9X aircraft, the Hong Kong-based carrier has now purchased an addition three Boeing 777-300ERs. The three new aircraft are expected to be delivered in 2015.
Cathay also purchased one more B747-8 Freighter aircraft, with the combined order worth HK$7.4 billion (US$954 million) at current list prices.
“Both the 777-300ER and the 747-8F offer a highly efficient solution on Cathay Pacific’s ultra-long-haul routes, combining superb operating economics with a significant reduction in emissions. These two aircraft types will form the backbone of our long-haul passenger and freighter fleets through to the end of the decade,” said Cathay’s chief executive, John Slosar.
The airline currently operates 38 B777-300ERs and with this latest purchase it now has 15 more of the aircraft on order for delivery between 2014 and 2015. The 21 B777-9X aircraft are not expected to enter service until 2020.
In addition, Cathay has outstanding orders for 48 Airbus A350s and eight A330s. These new wide-body jets will eventually replace the airline’s fleet of older A340s, B747-400s, B777-200s and B777-300s.
