Cathay Pacific’s first Airbus A350 aircraft has completed its maiden flight in the skies above southern France.
The aircraft will now enter the final phase of production, including the installation of its cabins, and undergo further checks and test flights ahead of its delivery to Cathay in the second quarter of the year.
The aircraft is the first of 48 A350s ordered by Cathay, including 22 A350-900s and 26 larger A350-1000s. Along with 21 new Boeing 777-X aircraft, which are being delivered from 2021 onwards, they will form the backbone of Cathay’s future long-haul fleet.
Cathay’s A350-900s will be configured in a three-class layout with 38 seats in business class, 28 in premium economy and 214 in economy, for a total capacity of 280 passengers. They will replace the airline’s existing fleet of A340-300s and B777-200s, which are being phased out.
Cathay’s passenger fleet currently comprises 120 twin-aisle aircraft, the majority of which are B777-300ERs and A330-300s.
