Celebrity Cruises has unveiled the latest innovation in cruise ship design; a large room that can move up and down the side of the ship.
Called the “Magic Carpet”, the semi-open air structure protrudes out from the starboard side, climbing vertically up 13 decks. The size of a tennis court, it contains a bar, seating and space for live performances.
The nature of the space also changes depending on which deck it stops at; for example, on deck 5 it becomes a new al fresco terrace for one of the ship’s restaurants, and on deck 14 it transforms into an open-air extension of the pool area. Once at the top, it becomes a standalone restaurant seating 90 passengers.
Magic Carpet is one of the main aspects of the new Celebrity Edge ship concept, which was revealed this week. Other key features of the new ship include removable barriers between the guest’s room and their balcony, to create an extra sense of space, and six split-level Edge Villas that feature private plunge pools. These are among a series of new high-end accommodation options, also including Penthouse Suites with large bathtubs on the veranda.
And on the top of the ship, a new “Rooftop Garden” will be created as a peaceful refuge during the day and a venue for live music and movies in the evening.
“Celebrity Edge is one of the most exciting, innovative and transformational ships I have ever been involved with,” said Richard D. Fain, chairman & CEO, Royal Caribbean, which operates the Celebrity brand. “The new features and refined design will establish a new baseline for ships from here on out.”
The 2,918-passenger Celebrity Edge will is scheduled to be delivered next year, homeporting in Florida from December 2018. It will be joined by three sister ships in 2020, 2021 and 2022.
