Chennai Airport will remain closed until Sunday 6 December, following the floods that have inundated the Indian city this week.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) confirmed the closure on Wednesday evening, with Chennai Airport reported to be under seven feet (2.1 metres) of water. The airport is flanked by the Adyar River, which has burst its banks and submerged the airfield.
The AAI added that 1,500 passengers have been evacuated from the airport.
The New Indian Express reports that the suspension of operations led to 45 inbound flights being redirected to other airports on Wednesday, with Bengaluru taking the largest number. It added that a total of 34 aircraft are now grounded at Chennai Airport.
Heavy rains have been inundating Tamil Nadu in recent weeks, bringing Chennai to a standstill. Rail services have also been cancelled and many areas have been left without power.
