The Minister also inaugurated a lighthouse technical museum in Chennai yesterday, hoping that visitors will take care not to damage the state of the art system which provides vital navigational safety.

The technical museum traces the evolution of lighthouse establishment in India. It displays vintage to the most modern lighthouse equipment and visitors to this museum will have a clear insight on the various facets of lighthouse engineering.

“It is proposed to engage the Directorate General of Lighthouses & Lightships (DGLL) in promotion of tourism in lighthouses, most of which are located in beautiful and scenic locations. The Shipping ministry proposes to choose 15 lighthouses under this scheme, Chennai being one of them,” Vasan said in a PIB release.
