Chiang Rai gets new international flight

Thailand’s northernmost province, Chiang Rai, will welcome another international flight later this year.
Low-cost carrier HK Express has announced plans to launch the first direct connection between Chiang Rai and Hong Kong, which will commence on 25 November 2016. Initially the service will run twice a week, with departures every Monday and Friday.
“Hong Kong travellers love to explore off-the-beaten-track destinations, and we’re thrilled to be able to provide the only non-stop flight to Chiang Rai,” said Andrew Cowen, director & CEO of HK Express.
“The second half of the year will be filled with announcements to a mix of new destinations for every type of traveller, whether you’re after a beach break or a city retreat.”
Under the new schedule, HK Express’ flights will depart HKIA in the early afternoon and return the same evening. This becomes only the second international route for Chiang Rai International Airport, following China Eastern Airlines’ direct flights from Kunming.
The airport is located in Chiang Rai city, but it also serves as the gateway to the fabled Golden Triangle region, where the borders of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar converge at the Mekong River.
