China accounts for half of Asian hotel development

Approximately half of all new hotel projects currently under construction in the Asia Pacific region are located in China, a new reported has revealed.

According to STR Global’s latest Construction Pipeline Report for the region, there are now 1,024 hotels comprising 253,320 rooms being developed in Asia Pacific. And 455 of these hotel projects, with a total of 140,455 rooms, are located in China.

This means that China accounts for 44% of the hotels under construction in Asia Pacific, and 55% of the rooms.

No other country came close to China’s rate of development, but three Asian nations did report more than 10,000 new hotels rooms under construction: Indonesia (28,248 rooms in 154 hotels), India (26,411 rooms in 163 hotels) and Malaysia (10,197 rooms in 37 hotels).

Including hotels in the planning stages, Asia Pacific region now has a total pipeline of 2,384 hotels comprising 545,056 rooms.
