China auctions slots at major airports

The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) will allow Chinese carriers to bid for new take-off and landing slots at Guangzhou and Shanghai airports next year.
Domestic slots at Guangzhou’s Baiyun International Airport will be auctioned of, while a lucky draw will be introduced to allocate slots at Shanghai’s Pudong International Airport, providing the airlines pay a fee.
In 2016, a total of 196 new weekly take-off and landing slots will be opened at each of the two airports, 50% of which will be allocated for domestic routes using the new method. International routes will continue to be assigned by the CAAC in the traditional manner.
The bidding is open to all Chinese airlines that have operated without any safety incidents in the past two years. The slots will be valid for three years.
