China Express Airlines has placed a firm order for up to 24 new jet aircraft.

The deal will see the Chongqing-based carrier purchase 16 new Canadian-made Bombardier CRJ900 regional aircraft, with options for a further eight. If all options are taken, the order will be worth more than US$1.1 billion at current list prices.

The deal was confirmed during the official state visit to China of Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada.

“Only eight years after first starting operations, China Express provides regional passenger services to nearly 50 cities throughout China with its all-Bombardier fleet,” said Wu Longjiang, president of China Express.

“The CRJ900… continues to be central to our development. We look forward to taking delivery of these additional aircraft and connecting more tier-two and tier-three cities.”

The new ‘NextGen’ version of the CRJ900 aircraft can seat up to 90 passengers, and promises to deliver 5.5% better fuel economy than previous versions.
