China is a front-runner in the race to host the 2022 Winter Olympics, the IOC president has said.
Speaking to Chinese media this week, Thomas Bach said the country was a “very strong candidate” for the Games. China, with Beijing as the host city, is competing with Sweden, Norway, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and a joint bid by Poland and Slovakia to host the Winter Olympics in nine years’ time.
“China is known worldwide as a reliable organiser. We all still remember the brilliant Olympic Games in 2008 in Beijing. So I think China will have a good chance, but it’s not an easy race,” Bach told the China Daily.
The Chinese bid will use Beijing as the main location for ice-based events, with snow-based disciplines taking place in Zhangjiakou in Hebei province, about 200km northwest of the capital.
One drawback for the Chinese bid could be the fact that it would mean back-to-back Asian Games, following South Korea’s hosting of the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.
The final decision on the 2022 host city is not expected to be made until July 2015.
