China Southern Airlines is planning to launch a series of new routes from Wuhan, the capital of Hubei province and largest city in central China.
These will include the carrier’s first ever international flights from Wuhan, with the launch of a new service to San Francisco starting on 16 December 2014.
This route, which will continue onwards to and from Guangzhou, will also mark the first ever direct service between Wuhan and the US. Flights will operate three times a week, departing Guangzhou and Wuhan every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, and returning from San Francisco every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.
The route will be operated using China Southern’s new Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.
In addition to the international route, China Southern also plans to add more domestic services from Wuhan’s Tianhe International Airport. New daily services will be offered to the resort town of Sanya, with three of these weekly flights including a stop in Zhanjiang, Guangdong province.
The airline will also link Wuhan with Haikou, the capital of Hainan province, via Liuzhou, in southern China’s Guangxi region. All the new domestic routes will be operated using Boeing 737 aircraft.
With this expansion, China Southern will hope to rival China Eastern Airlines, which is currently the dominant airline in Wuhan.
