China tops two million cruise passengers

China’s cruise industry continues to boom, with the country exceeding two million passengers for the first time in 2016.

Figures released by the China Cruise & Yacht Industry Association also revealed that Chinese ports handled a total of 1,040 inbound and outbound cruise ships last year, with 18 cruise ships based in the country in 2016, compared to just one in 2006.

And the popularity of cruising in China is forecast to surge in the coming years, with 2.6m Chinese passengers expected in 2017 and 3.5m by 2020.

Tianjin’s cruise port was found to be the busiest in Asia last year, receiving 138 calls in 2016. This number is expected to increase to 150 in 2017.
