China has tunnelled its first high-speed rail line through the country’s southwest limestone karst region.
Xinhua reports that work was completed on Sunday 21 December 2014 on the 857km line linking Guiyang, capital of Guizhou province, with Guangzhou. The line is expected to become operational on Friday.
The line includes 238 tunnels – comprising approximately half of the total distance – two of which are more than 14km long.
Guizhou’s scenic limestone landscape makes it a popular tourist destination. Its karsts were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2007.
