China United Airlines, the Beijing-based subsidiary of China Eastern Airlines, will start operating under a low-cost model this month.

The airline has already scrapped its first and business class seats, and will now start offering seat-only fares, with charges for additional items such as pre-selected seats, checked baggage, in-flight meals, ticket changes and travel insurance.

The airline has also stated that following the low-cost transition, it will not offer any kind of compensation for flight delays or cancellations. The full switch to the no-frills model will be completed by 29 March 2015.

Promotional fares on the revamped airline will start from just CNY8 (US$1.30).

Based at Beijing’s second airport, Nanyuan, China United operates a fleet of 31 Boeing 737 aircraft, but plans to increase this to 50 aircraft by end of this year.
