China’s railways handle 253m New Year trips

China’s railway network handled 253 million passengers over Chinese New Year, or Spring Festival, holidays, it has been revealed.

Reported by Xinhua, the China Railway Corporation (CRC) revealed on Sunday that the figure was reached in the first 38 days of the Spring Festival, meaning that the country handled an average of 6.66m passengers per day during this period.

This level rose to 7.5m passengers on Sunday, when the CRC deployed an extra 487 trains to cope with high demand.

The official 40-day Spring Festival season started on 16 January 2014 and will end this week. The CRC warned however, that the number of daily trips is likely to remain high until the end of the month.

Approximately 3.62 billion trips are expected to be made on all modes of transportation during the 40-day period, according to official data.
