China’s Juneyao Airlines will launch flights to the Japanese island of Okinawa next month.
From January 2014, the Shanghai-based carrier will operate four weekly flights from Pudong International Airport to Okinawa’s Naha Airport.
Services will depart the Shanghai hub every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday at 1500, arriving at Okinawa at 1800. The return service will leave the Japanese island at 1900, getting back into Shanghai at 2000. All flights will operate using a 158-seat Airbus A320 aircraft.
The Okinawa launch will mark the end of a long wait for Juneyao, which originally intended to commence the route in September 2012, but was forced to postpone it due to the ongoing tensions between China and Japan over the Senkaku Islands.
Okinawa becomes Juneyao’s first Japanese destination, and joins Seoul, Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket in the airline’s international route network.
It will compete directly with China Eastern Airlines on the Shanghai-Okinawa route.
