An airport in eastern China has been forced to suspend its operations after an incident in which a passenger tried to set fire to an aircraft seat.

The Xinhua news agency reports that the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) ordered the closure of Taizhou’s Luqiao Airport, in eastern China’s Zhejiang province, after a passenger was arrested for burning the seat on a Shenzhen Airlines flight.

The CAAC will now send a work group to supervise the airport’s management, and has also ordered safety checks on other small, medium-sized and new airports in eastern China.

The suspension was implemented on Wednesday morning after the passenger was detained for burning a seat on the Shenzhen Airlines, which was flying from Taizhou and Guangzhou.

Several major airlines serve Taizhou, including Air China and China Eastern Airlines.
