Four major Chinese airports have been penalised by Chinese regulators for their poor punctuality records.
The Shanghai Daily reports that Shanghai’s two airports, Pudong and Hongqiao, have been reprimanded by the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), along with Nanjing Lukou and Hangzhou Xiaoshan airports. As a result, none of these airports will be permitted to add any new flights for the next two months.
This is because the punctuality performance of these four airports slipped below 50% between March and July 2016. Shanghai’s Pudong airport was the worst offender, with an on-time performance of just 38% during this period. The data was provided by flight monitoring service Veryzhun.com.
Beijing Capital airport, with an on-time rating of exactly 50%, narrowly escaped sanctions.
The CAAC said that air traffic congestion, adverse weather conditions and poor management were the main reasons for flight delays and cancellations.
