China and Vietnam are at loggerheads over China’s plans to drill near the Paracel Islands

Several Chinese travel companies have suspended tours to Vietnam following the recent violent protests again Chinese businesses in the country.

Ctrip International, China’s largest online travel company, confirmed to the Xinhua news agency on Sunday that it is advising its customers to postpone their trips to Vietnam. Those who have already booked a Vietnam tour with the company will be refunded, the company said.

Other travel agencies, including Caissa and the China International Travel Service, have also suspended their Vietnam tours.

Over the last week, the China National Tourism Administration (CNTA) has posted several notices from the Chinese government warning against travel to Vietnam. More than 3,000 Chinese nationals have been evacuated from Vietnam following violence triggered by China’s plans to start drilling in disputed waters near the Paracel Islands.

The dispute has the potential to severely damage Vietnam’s tourism industry; approximately a quarter of all international visitors to Vietnam are Chinese.
