Commercial flights will resume at Pondicherry Airport next month, for the first time since 2015.
The union territory in southern India, also known as Puducherry, has been without passenger air services since Alliance Air suspended its flights from Bengaluru almost two years ago. But SpiceJet will launch a new route linking Hyderabad with Pondicherry on 16 August 2017, under the Indian government’s UDAN scheme which aims to connect underserved parts of the country.
This becomes SpiceJet’s third UDAN route, following the recently launched flights connecting Mumbai with Porbander and Kandla.
“SpiceJet is glad to announce its third UDAN route and is proud to be a part of the nationalistic agenda of regional connectivity. The new flight will get Pondicherry closer to major destinations on SpiceJets’ network,” said Shilpa Bhatia, SpiceJet’s senior vice president of commercial.
SpiceJet has been awarded six proposals and 11 routes under the first phase of the UDAN regional connectivity scheme. Four of the six proposals will serve destinations that did not previously receive any commercial flights: Adampur, Kandla, Pondicherry and Jaisalmer.
The new Hyderabad-Pondicherry route will be operated using a 78-seat Bombardier Q400 aircraft. Flights are now open for sale.
