Cunard has announced the Queen Mary 2 will recreate Britannia’s original 1840 crossing for a series of celebrations to mark the cruise line’s 175th anniversary.
Queen Mary 2 will recreate the sailing from Liverpool on 4 July 2015, 175 years after its ship Britannia left the port for America.
The 10-night crossing will be the first Cunard trans-atlantic crossing from Liverpool since January 1968 and will call at Halifax and Boston just as Britannia did, before arriving in New York on 14 July.
The full voyage will start at Southampton two days before.
Liverpool, the founding city of Cunard, will also be host to a three-day celebratory event with all three ships to head to the UK port in May.
Queen Mary 2 will arrive on 24 May and will berth overnight, then will be followed by Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria the next day, lining up on the Mersey to what is expected to be a huge crowd.
Queen Mary 2 will depart Liverpool on 25 May as will Queen Elizabeth, while Queen Victoria will depart on 26 May.
Southampton will not miss out on the celebrations, with all three ships due to sail into the port together on 3 May.
All three will depart later that day in formation too, with Queen Mary 2 heading to New York and Queen Elizabeth sailing around Northern Europe.
Queen Victoria’s departure that day will cover an itinerary to remember Cunard’s former ship Lusitania, which was torpedoed while en-route from New York to Liverpool on 7 May 1915.
The seven-night cruise will commemorate the loss of 22 Cunard ships during the First World War and will call at Cobh, Ireland on 7 May with a special service to be held for Lusitania.
The cruise, marking 100 years since the war broke out, will also call at Guernsey, Le Havre and Dublin.
“Cunard history reads like no other. For so long the heartbeats of Cunard and Britain have been as one and we intend to celebrate this landmark anniversary in grand style. These special voyages have been planned over many months to commemorate key dates in the company’s history with all who wish to be part of Cunard’s special and unique heritage,” said Cunard’s CEO David Dingle. “We look forward to delivering this year of spectacle and celebration to the many people who share the pride we feel in Cunard’s ongoing success on both sides of the Atlantic and beyond.”
A brochure has been launched detailing the commemorative itineraries.
