Karnataka-based tour operator Deccan Dreams has launched a new programme of holidays for gap year students and older visitors, designed to engage travellers with local cultures.
The holidays and tours give overseas visitors the chance to take part in projects designed to help local communities in Karnataka, while also affording a unique insight into local culture and traditions.
For gap year students visiting the state for a month or more, Deccan Dreams has set up various projects to assist with rural health care programmes, the repair of schools, construction of drainage, recycling activities, forestation programmes, organic farming and sanitation.
During this work experience, students will be able to meet local artisan families and learn traditional skills such as woodcraft, pottery, weaving, folk dancing and music.
Meanwhile for senior visitors, Deccan Dreams is offering a 15-day experience staying with an Indian family and participating in their daily lives. Activities include visits to farms and learning local crafts, plus trips to local art centres, markets and silk worm farms.
