Thousands of flights have been cancelled or delayed in the US as further extreme cold conditions have returned.

Flight tracker website FlightAware.com found 259 flights were cancelled at Hartsfield-Jackson International in Atlanta with 146 delayed, while Chicago’s airports saw just fewer than 200 cancellations and a similar number of delays.

The disruption followed three previous days of issues with more than 3,400 US flights cancelled across Tuesday and Wednesday.

According to CNN Delta Air Lines requested a ground stop due to the weather and airport access difficulties, which was later changed to a ground delay programme.

The airline has warned of further delays today on its website, affecting flights to and from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, the Carolinas and Texas.

Flightaware’s Mark Duell told CNN that many airports affected do not usually face winter weather and would have been unprepared for the conditions.
