The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has placed a large order with Bombardier to supply it with new trains.

The Canadian company was selected to supply 162 Bombardier Movia metro cars to Delhi‘s metro network, increasing DMRC’s fleet from 614 to 776 cars. The order is valued at approximately INR15 billion (US$228 million) and deliveries will run from the third quarter of 2016 to early 2018.

“We are pleased to have received this new order for another 162 Movia vehicles for New Delhi,” said Harsh Dhingra, Bombardier Transportation’s chief country representative for India.

“It is an excellent endorsement of our growing relationship with Delhi Metro who has already awarded us around US$1.2 billion worth of rolling stock and signalling contracts. These additional trains will be delivered from our state-of-the-art manufacturing sites in Vadodara.”

The modern, high-capacity Movia metro vehicles will be able to accommodate 1,740 passengers in a six-car train, and up to 2,400 passengers in an eight-car layout. The company said this will provide “a much needed capacity increase on two of Delhi’s main metro lines”.

Bombardier is also Delhi Metro’s largest signalling solutions contractor.
