Delta Air Lines has been granted permission to launch a new service connecting Seattle with Tokyo’s Haneda airport.

Following the US Department of Transportation decision, Delta will launch flights on the route in March 2013, using a two-class Boeing 767-300ER aircraft.

“I want to thank the DOT for its preliminary approval of this service, which will provide significant benefits for consumers in the Pacific Northwest, boost the region’s economy and create jobs by further strengthening ties to Asia,” said Delta’s CEO Richard Anderson. “Business travellers in particular will benefit due to Haneda Airport’s convenient access to central Tokyo.”

The new Haneda flight strengthens Seattle as Delta’s Asian gateway. In addition to Tokyo, Delta recently announced a new service to Shanghai, and also operates flights to Beijing and Osaka. By next summer the airline will operate more than 40 daily flights to 15 destinations from Seattle.

Alaska Airlines will codeshare on the Haneda-Seattle flight, offering one-stop connections to 55 US cities on Delta and Alaska’s domestic networks.
