Delta Air Lines has placed an order with Airbus for 15 A321 single-aisle aircraft.

The new jets, which are scheduled to be delivered from 2018 onwards, will replace older aircraft being retired from Delta’s fleet. The order is valued at more than US$1.6 billion at current list prices.

“The A321’s economic efficiency and product offering relative to the aircraft they will replace ensures that this opportunistic transaction will enhance profitability, customer satisfaction, and shareholder value for Delta,” said Nathaniel Pieper, Delta’s vice president of fleet strategy & transactions.

Delta currently operates 126 Airbus single-aisle aircraft, comprising the smaller A319 and A320 models. The latest order for the longer A321 takes Delta’s total commitment for this model to 45 aircraft.

Many of Delta’s A321s will be produced at Airbus’ brand new A320 assembly line in the US, which is currently under construction in Alabama.
