Disney has unveiled a new line-up of new movie-based attractions at its theme parks, including new experiences based on the Star Wars, Avatar and Iron Man movie franchises.
At the D23 EXPO 2015 in California, Walt Disney Parks & Resorts’ chairman, Bob Chapek, gave 7,500 fans a behind-the-scenes look at what the company is planning, including new and enhanced Star Wars experiences at the Florida and California theme parks, and more details on “Pandora – The World of Avatar”, which is already under construction at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
Chapek also shared an exclusive video of the company’s first-ever Marvel attraction, “Iron Man Experience”, which is coming to Hong Kong Disneyland in 2016.
“From Disneyland’s 60th anniversary celebration to the anticipation of Shanghai Disney Resort, we’re in the midst of unprecedented growth and expansion around the globe,” said Chapek. “With these new announcements, we continue our legacy in creating innovative attractions, worldwide entertainment, and magical lands that take our guests into the worlds of stories they love.”
Earlier in the day, The Walt Disney Company’s chairman & CEO, Bob Iger, unveiled plans to bring Star Wars-themed lands to Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Orlando and Disneyland in Anaheim.
Each 5.7-hectare land will include a new “Star Tours” experience, featuring locations and characters from the upcoming film, ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’, plus a new interactive attraction called “Star Wars Launch Bay”. Finally, the ‘Jedi Training Academy’ will be revamped to include new experiences, characters and villains.
The Avatar attractions meanwhile, aim to immerse guests in the fictional planet of Pandora (pictured top). Designed in partnership with the movie’s director, James Cameron, “Pandora – The World of Avatar” will include floating mountains, a bioluminescent forest and the winged creatures known as Banshees. The centrepiece of the attraction will be “Avatar Flight of Passage”, which allows guests to soar over the planet.
Finally, attendees at the D23 EXPO came face-to-face with Iron Man, who will arrive at Hong Kong Disneyland in 2016. The “Iron Man Experience” will be the first Marvel attraction at any Disney park, and will see Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, battle his arch enemy Hydra in the skies above Hong Kong.
