The Walt Disney Company has unveiled more details of its first park in mainland China, Shanghai Disneyland.
The new resort, which will be the world’s largest Disneyland, will include six themed lands filled with attractions and live entertainment acts – many of which will be unique to the Shanghai park.
Disney’s chairman & CEO, Bob Iger, presented the new attractions with a scale model of Shanghai Disneyland at the Shanghai Expo Centre this week.
“We are building something truly special here in Shanghai that not only showcases the best of Disney’s storytelling but also celebrates and incorporates China’s incredibly rich heritage to create a one-of-a-kind destination that will delight and entertain the people of China for generations to come,” said Iger.
“We are taking everything we’ve learned from our six decades of exceeding expectations – along with our relentless innovation and famous creativity to create a truly magical place that is both authentically Disney and distinctly Chinese.”
Shanghai Disney Resort will include six themed lands: Adventure Isle, Gardens of Imagination, Mickey Avenue, Tomorrowland, Treasure Cove and Fantasyland. Attractions in these lands will include rides and shows based on the classic Disney characters, along with Winnie the Pooh, Alice in Wonderland, Toy Story, Pirates of the Caribbean, Marvel and Star Wars.
Treasure Cove will be the first pirate-themed land in a Disney park, and will include a Pirates of the Caribbean boat ride, while Adventure Isle will include a rafting adventure. The futuristic Tomorrowland zone will feature a Buzz Lightyear attraction and a brand new rollercoaster based on the movie TRON.
Close to Tomorrowland will be two experiences created especially for Shanghai Disneyland – Star Wars Launch Bay and Marvel Universe. The Star Wars attraction allow guests to visit set-pieces, props and memorabilia from the most recent movie, while Marvel Universe offers the chance to attend a “multimedia mission briefing” on Marvel characters.
There will also be a large shopping, dining and entertainment district called Disneytown, which will include the Walt Disney Grand Theatre, and Wishing Star Park, the central point of the resort which offers 40 hectares of gardens and lakes and a 2.5km walking path.
Work on Shanghai Disneyland started in 2011. The park was initially intended to launch this year, but the scope of the project was expanded to include more attractions. As a result, the theme park is now expected to welcome its first guests in spring 2016.
