Dusit International has revealed that its flagship hotel, Dusit Thani Bangkok, will close on 16 April 2018 as it embarks on a major expansion project.

The US$1 billion development of the site in central Bangkok will see the hotel completely rebuilt and incorporated into a new mixed-use complex also featuring a shopping mall, residences and a park. Old derelict buildings will be knocked down but several existing trees will be incorporated into the new development.

Originally opened in February 1970, Dusit Thani Bangkok was once the city’s tallest building and largest hotel.

The site on Rama IV Road will now be developed by Central Pattana to create the new business, leisure and accommodation complex. Dusit said that “the property’s famous spire” will be incorporated into the new-build.

“Dusit Thani Bangkok is an icon made everlasting through all those who share its history, and we are sincerely grateful to everyone over the years who has made the hotel a resounding success,” said Sukanya Janchoo, general manager of Dusit Thani Bangkok. “The hotel’s rich heritage… will be carried over into our exciting new chapter to come. The Dusit Thani legend will continue.”

The new hotel is expected to complete in 2022, with the rest of the project due to follow by 2024.
