easyJet has confirmed an order for 135 Airbus aircraft for EUR8.9 billion (US$11.9bn).
The low-cost carrier has purchased 35 A320s and 100 new generation A320neos, at much lower prices than those listed.
Its first new A320 will be delivered in 2015 and A320neo from 2017, with an option to purchase another 100 A320neos.
Around 85 of the aircraft will be used to replace older models, with the airline looking to have up to 298 aircraft by 2022.
Chief executive Carolyn McCall said Airbus and rival Boeing had fought hard for its business.
“All manufacturers competed hard for the easyJet business. Both Airbus and Boeing offered us new generation aircraft that met our requirements and offered greatly improved fuel efficiency. Ultimately, Airbus offered us the best deal, and at a price with a greater discount to the list price than their landmark fleet purchase with easyJet in 2002,” she said.
“These arrangements, combined with easyJet’s cost advantage, leading network and compelling customer proposition mean that easyJet is uniquely positioned to be a structural winner in European aviation,” she added.
