Hisham Zaazou, the tourism minister of Mohamed Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood government, is one of five ministers who have reportedly quit amid widespread anti-government protests.
Middle East news agency Al Jazeera, who cited a senior officials as the source, said the ministers had resigned in sympathy with the protests, which are calling for president Morsi’s resignation.
Zaazou has resigned along with communication & IT minister Atef Helmi; legal & parliamentary affairs minister Hatem Bagato; water minister Abdel Qawy Khalifa; and environment minister Khaled Abdel-Aal.
The demonstrations mark the one year anniversary of Morsi’s reign, which has left many Egyptian’s disenfranchised after the Arab Spring as Travel Daily reported last month.
Protests in Egypt have now reached their second day, with the Muslim Brotherhood’s headquarters set on fire and looted by demonstrators.
According to the BBC, the Egyptian army has given the government an ultimatum if it did not heed “the will of the people”.
A presidential statement rejected the ultimatum, insisting that Morsi was to continue with his own plans for national reconciliation.
