Emirates will cease operating its Dubai-Kuala Lumpur-Melbourne service later this year, as it opts to cut out the Malaysian capital and fly direct to Australia.
The re-routing, which comes into effect on 30 October 2016, will mean that Emirates will operate two non-stop daily flights between Dubai and Melbourne, plus a third daily service which operates via Singapore. The airline will retain three daily direct flights between Dubai and KL.
Including its partnership with Qantas, Emirates will offer a total of four daily services to and from Melbourne – three of which operate non-stop, including Qantas’ daily flight. These form part of a total of 91 weekly flights between Australia and Dubai offered by the Emirates-Qantas partnership – including six daily A380 flights – to Brisbane, Perth, Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney.
The news is not great for Malaysian passengers however; Malaysia Airlines suspended its own KL-Dubai service earlier this year as part of a major tie-up with Emirates, whereby passengers can tap into the Middle Eastern carrier’s global route network via Dubai. The reduction of another daily flight between KL and Dubai will reduce the opportunities for a quick connection.
Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia X will both continue to fly direct between KL and Melbourne.
