Emirates has announced plans to launch daily Airbus A380 flights to Barcelona from 1 February 2014.

The deployment of Emirates’ largest aircraft will replace the Boeing 777-300ER that currently operates the route, increasing capacity to the Spanish city by almost 44%. The arrival of the Dubai-based carrier’s 517-seat A380 will also mark the first time the aircraft has operated a regular scheduled service to Barcelona’s El Prat Airport.

“The new service, once commenced, will continue to connect customers in Spain with Dubai as well as key destinations in Australasia, the Indian Subcontinent and the Far East,” said Hubert Frach, Emirates’ divisional senior vice president of commercial operations.

“The A380 has been a part of our fleet for almost five years and continues to peak customer interest wherever it flies. Introducing the A380 to Barcelona permanently will not only increase our capacity but will also further highlight our commitment to the city,” he added.

The 517-seat version of the Emirates A380 offers 14 first class suites with two onboard showers, 76 flat-bed seats in business class and 427 in economy class.

Emirates’ A380 fleet currently serves 21 destinations with a further four to follow in the next six months – Brisbane (1 October 2013), Los Angeles (2 December 2013), Mauritius (16 December 2013) and Zurich (1 January 2014).

Emirates is the world’s biggest A380 operator, with a fleet of 25 aircraft and a further 55 to be delivered.
