Ethiopian Airlines is planning to expand its operations in India with new flights, including the launch of a new route to Chennai.
The Times of India reports that the African airline is in talks with the India’s civil aviation authorities, including the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), on the possibility of adding more flights to the country and expanding its codeshare with Air India.
“We are looking forward to launch flight operations to Chennai from Ethiopia. We are keenly looking at [flying] passengers from Chennai,” Ethiopian Airlines’ CEO Tewolde Gebremariam was quoted saying.
India and Ethiopia had signed a pact in 2015 which allowed Ethiopia to exchange Kolkata for Bengaluru as a destination. Three additional domestic codeshare points – Jaipur, Kolkata and Pune – were also granted, to be operated in tandem with Air India.
“Air India is our Star Alliance member and we have contributed a lot for India because of our long time association. We are now looking to expand the alliance,” Gebremariam added.
Ethiopian Airlines currently operates flights to Delhi and Mumbai from Addis Ababa.
