Ethiopian Airlines has trained eight pilots how to fly the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

Training took place recently at the Boeing Flight Services campus at London’s Gatwick airport.

The Addis Ababa-based carrier will become the first African airline to operate the Dreamliner, and additional batches of trainees will now undergo 787 simulator training at the same facility. Qualified wide-body aircraft pilots can transition to the new aircraft in approximately five days.

“This is an important milestone in the history of Ethiopian Airlines,” said Captain Desta Zeru, the carrier’s Senior Vice President of Flight Operations. “Our pilots are now qualified as the first African pilots to fly the 787.”

Ethiopian has ordered 10 B787-8 Dreamliners, with deliveries expected to commence later this year.
