Etihad Airways will start offering flights to Okinawa next year, as part of a new codeshare agreement with Hong Kong Airlines.
The Abu Dhabi-based airline will start flying to Hong Kong on 15 June 2015, and its new partnership will allow passengers to connect onwards from Hong Kong to Okinawa with Hong Kong Airlines.
The Okinawa route forms part of a broader codeshare deal between the two airlines. Hong Kong Airlines will place its ‘HX’ code on Etihad’s triple-daily flights between Abu Dhabi and Bangkok, and two upcoming services connecting the UAE capital with Madrid and Hong Kong. In return, Etihad will place its ‘EY’ code on Hong Kong Airlines’ flights from Hong Kong to Bangkok and Okinawa.
“Codeshares are a fundamental part of Etihad Airways’ long-term growth strategy and we are delighted to sign this agreement with Hong Kong Airlines,” said Kevin Knight, Etihad’s chief strategy & planning officer.
“Our partnership will result in multiple benefits for both airlines and, importantly, there are considerable advantages for travellers as well, such as enhanced connections and a more frequent service between the various destinations covered.”
The codeshare flights will be bookable from 23 December 2014 for travel from 6 January 2015. Etihad’s Madrid and Hong Kong routes will start from 29 March and 15 June 2015 respectively.
