The Etihad-Jet Airways deal is to be discussed by the Indian cabinet following a request by the Indian Prime Minister’s office, raising concerns over the intent of the meeting, according to a report in AFP.
India’s Aviation Minister Ajit Singh, told NDTV that he didn’t see a problem “in the Abu Dhabi deal going through”.
“Ask the prime minister’s office if the deal is on hold despite being signed,” he added.
A parliamentary committee last month recommended the bilateral agreement with Abu Dhabi “be reconsidered by the government to protect our national carrier and the airports of India”.
Singh previously said he would resign if the deal did not go through and suggested the move was a political one with elections looming.
External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid confirmed the deal was being examined, but said he didn’t think “any deal has halted”.
“It is being examined as normally any deal has to be examined,” he added.
Etihad announced in April its decision to purchase a 24% stake in Jet Airways for Rs 2,058 crore (US $342 million).
