Etihad Airways has unveiled the latest stage of its expansion in India, with the addition of more connections to Kochi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kozhikode and Hyderabad.
The Abu Dhabi-based airline said that “strong demand from business and leisure travellers” has led it to introduce double-daily frequencies to Bengaluru, Chennai and Kozhikode, all of which start from today. Then from 1 October 2014, the Hyderabad route will also be served twice a day.
Double-daily frequencies were introduced to Kochi route last month, adding to the existing 14 weekly services offered to Mumbai and New Delhi.
The airline will utilise its new Airbus A320 aircraft for many of the new flights, while the Kochi flights have been upgraded to a larger A321 aircraft, and the overnight Delhi service will be upgraded to a three-class Boeing 777 from 15 July.
“As one of the largest, fastest-growing and most exciting travel markets in the world, India continues to play an important role in our growth plans. Last year alone, more than 885,000 people flew on our Indian services, a substantial increase of 20% on the previous year,” said James Hogan, president & CEO of Etihad Airways.
“Subject to regulatory approvals, we will continue to expand our India operations and work with Jet Airways to accommodate strong growth and deliver much greater choice for travel to and from India.”
Last month, Etihad also announced a significant expansion of its codeshare agreement with Jet Airways, after the two airlines obtained regulatory approval to team up on 43 additional routes, bringing the total number of services in their codeshare agreement to 71.
As well as the previously-mentioned routes, Etihad also operates daily to Ahmedabad, Thiruvananthapuram and Jaipur.
