European airports saw a steady increase in both international and domestic passengers in 2012, figures from the Airports Council International (ACI) have found.
In its latest results calculated from some of the world’s top airports, ACI said 950m people had flown internationally in the year up to December 2012, up 2.8% year-on-year.
Domestic travel within the 12 months sat at 273m, with overall traffic up 1.8% to 1.23 billion.
Globally, the world’s airports handled almost 4.11bn passengers last year, up 3.9% and primarily driven by the Asia Pacific and Middle East markets.
“Although we saw slightly lower year-over-year growth rates in passenger traffic in 2012 from month to month as compared to 2011, the overall result for the year was in line with ACI forecasts, which factored in the slowdown in certain European and North American markets,” said Rafael Echevarne, world economics director at ACI.
