EVA Air and Shanghai target UK trade

Taiwanese carrier EVA Air and the Shanghai Municipal Tourism Administration (SMTA) have unveiled a UK focused partnership at an event at The Ritz in London.
The partnership, which is being pushed as ‘One Trip Taiwan and Shanghai’, is aimed at specifically promoting both Shanghai and Taiwan to the UK as an Asian tourist destinations through EVA Air.
The Chinese city saw around 170,000 Brits spend time there in 2012, something, that Li Bin Cheng, director of the Shanghai Municipal Tourism Administration, explained as being a crucial target market going forward.
“We have witnessed an increase in UK visitor numbers within Shanghai for several years,” he said. “We are focusing on four main markets: the UK, Italy, Germany and France. The British economy is stable and through EVA Air we are further developing our relations with the country and are keen to pursue those relationships through the travel trade too.”
Ken Chang senior vice president of EVA Air added: “We have increased flight frequency between Taiwan and cities in mainland China, passenger demand for our services in Europe has also grown. More and more people are attracted to Eastern culture, business opportunities in regions of Asia are thriving and travellers are recognising the time savings and economic benefits of combining Taiwan and China into one trip.”
The carrier’s general manager for the UK Rick Hsieh continued: “We have looked to expand our network through a strategy that has centred on joining the Star Alliance network. Now, using Bangkok as our second hub, we can open up a lot more of Asia to our UK customers than was previously possible.”
EVA Air has a daily service between Heathrow and Bangkok from where the carrier can offer connections to 29 destinations in mainland China as well as Taipei.
