Expedia buys Seattle waterfront HQ for US$230m

Expedia is planning to move into a new waterfront headquarters in Seattle in 2018.
The company announced that it plans to acquire the 162,000m², multi-building campus currently occupied by biopharmaceutical company, Amgen, for US$228.9 million.
Expedia said its plans for the site include a “new modern design” for 70,000m² of existing buildings, and possible future expansion. The new home also features outdoor recreational areas, on-site dining options and a fitness centre, and offers views of downtown Seattle, Mount Rainier, the Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains.
Expedia is currently based in nearby Bellevue.
“It has been a tough decision to leave Bellevue, which has been a welcoming and supportive home to Expedia for many years,” said Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Expedia.
“Owning an iconic waterfront headquarters will position us well in the competition for top talent and aligns with the work hard, play hard culture that defines Expedia. We are thrilled to make Seattle our permanent home with a new headquarters befitting the growing global technology company we are.”
Ed Murray, Mayor of Seattle, said he was “delighted” with Expedia’s decision to relocate to the city.
“We look forward to working with Expedia to ensure we have a thoughtful, strategic plan to integrate them seamlessly into the neighbourhood and are pleased that they’ve chosen this beautiful campus as their long-term home,” said Murray
Expedia will join other Seattle-based companies including Amazon.com, Getty Images, Starbucks and Redfin.
